in Riverton in eastern West Virginia. Seneca Cavern has been open to
visitors since 1928. Guided tours are given and last about 1 hour. Stratosphere
Cave is the oldest recorded cave in West Virginia and the tour of this
cave is more strenuous. Helmets and lights are issued for this 1 hour
guided tour. CaveXplore teaches you all about caving and then you can
spend 2 ½ hours exploring a cave at your own pace, climbing, crawling
and getting dirty. Visitors can also buy a bag of mining rough and do
some gemstone mining of their own. Fool’s gold, rubies, rose quartz
and garnets are some of the things you might find.
Located
in Ansted which is about 50 miles east of Charleston. This 276-acre
park borders a rugged section of the New River Gorge National River
which has some of the most challenging whitewater boating in the nation.
The River Nature Center has interactive nature displays that allow you
to experience life within the New River community. There are 5 trails
in the park that give you views of the river or the waterfalls. The
aerial tramway that takes you from the lodge to the marina at the bottom
of the gorge is a main attraction here. When you get to the bottom of
the gorge, you can take a ride on a jetboat. On this ride, you can see
one of the world’s longest single arch steel bridges, the New River
Gorge Bridge, that is 876 feet above the water. There is also an outdoor
swimming pool that is open in the summer.
