Located
in Bellevue in north central Ohio about 15 miles south of Sandusky.
It is one of Ohio’s largest underground caverns. It was discovered in
1872 but not opened to the public until 1933. The one hour guided tour
takes you through seven rooms or levels. At the lowest level, 110 feet
below ground, you can see the clear stream known as “Ole’ Mist’ry River”
that is part of the groundwater system in the region. You can also pan
for gemstones, minerals, crystals, arrowheads, and fossils.
Located
in the western basin of Lake Erie about 12 miles from Sandusky. It is
the largest American island in Lake Erie. Some activities here include
a cruise around the island, fishing, bird watching, swimming, hiking,
biking, and kayaking. You can also go scuba diving and explore some
of the shipwrecks in the area or visit the glacial grooves. They are
the largest easily accessible glacial grooves of this type in the world.
The whole island is on the National Register of Historical Places.
