Located
in Rochert in North Central Minnesota, 18 miles northeast of Detroit
Lakes, MN. It was established as a refuge and breeding ground for migratory
birds and other wildlife. Tamarac is in one of the most diverse zones
in North America where Eastern hardwood trees, Northern coniferous forests
and Western tall grass prairie meet. A visitor center and wildlife drive
offer beautiful views of lakes, marshes and wildlife. You can hike,
visit historic sites, hunt, fish canoe or cross-country ski. There are
more than 250 species of birds at the refuge. Trumpeter swans, bald
eagles, otters, porcupines and wolves are just a few of the kinds of
wildlife you can see here.
Located
near International Falls in northern Minnesota. To really enjoy this
park you need to park your car and explore by boat. There are 3 visitor
centers here but only one is open year round and that is the Rainy Lake
Visitor Center located on the shore of Black Bay. All 3 visitor centers
have free public boat launches. You can explore the park by guided boat
tours, canoe trips or hikes. You can also charter a tour boat or camp
at one of the 270 sites within the park. There are 13 Destination sites
within the park boundaries that can be reached only by boat and allow
visitors the opportunity to learn about the park. Many of these sites
have historic structures. There are hiking trails accessible by car
and some only accessible by water. In the winter you can explore the
park on one of the three packed snowshoe trails and you can even borrow
snowshoes free of charge from the visitor center. Other winter activities
include snowmobiling, cross-country skiing or ice-fishing.
