This
bridge is a 2,120 foot long cable-stayed bridge that connects Verona
Island to Prospect. The observatory is 420 feet above the Penobscot
River, the largest river in Maine, and offers 360 degree views of the
surrounding area. It is the only bridge observatory in the united States
and only one of four bridge observatories in the world. The observatory
is open daily from May 1 through October 31. You can buy a ticket just
for the observatory or in combination with a tour of
Fort Knox.
Fort Knox is one of the best preserved fortifications on the New England
seacoast.
Located
in Downeast Maine about 70 miles east of Bangor. This is a 274 acre
state park on Schoppee Point which is south of Machias. Englishman Bay
has a half-mile crescent beach of sand and pebbles. From the beach you
can see Libby Lighthouse, formerly known as Machias Lighthouse, which
was built in 1817 and is still an active beacon. Simpson Pond allows
for a warmer fresh water swim. Between the beach and the pond are picnic
areas and a play area for children. You can explore Englishman Bay and
Simpson Pond by canoe or kayak. You can also hike along the 6-miles
of trails, fish, cross-country ski or snowshoe and bird watch.
