Assateague Island National SeashoreThis barrier island is located off the east coast of Maryland and Virginia. The visitor center on the Maryland side has marine aquariums, a touch tank, exhibits and a film about the wild horses on the island. Biking is a great way to explore the island. Camping is available only in the Maryland district of the island. You can rent canoes and kayaks seasonally in the Maryland district. Collecting shells, surf and shell fishing are allowed as well as swimming and surfing and over sand vehicles. The wild horses are descendants of domesticated animals brought to the island over 300 years ago. They are free roaming and can be seen anywhere on the island.
