Fort Boonesborough State Park

Fort Boonesborough State ParkLocated in Richmond, KY which is about 25 miles south of Lexington, Ky. The original fort was founded by Daniel Boone and his men in April 1775. This fort saw a lot of action during the Revolutionary War including an attack by American Indians known as “The Great Siege” in 1778. The fort has been rebuilt and is a working fort with cabins, bunkhouses and during the summer there are blacksmiths and potters who do demonstrations. Throughout the year there are special events such as guided walking tours of the fort, fireside chats and re-enactments.

Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site

Wickliffe Mounds State Historic SiteLocated in Wickliffe, KY on the Mississippi River. This archaeological site has mounds, a museum, a walking trail, welcome center, gift shop and picnic area. A Native American village occupied this site around A.D. 1100. The museum has displays of Mississippian pottery, stone tools and other artifacts found when 2 of the mounds were excavated. You can take a walk to view the Burial Mound and the Ceremonial Mound or take a walking tour. There is also a hands-on activity station in the main gallery where you can use Mississippian tools. This site is open April - October, Thursday - Sunday and at other times of the year by appointment for groups.
