Spencer Opal MinesLocated behind the Opal country Cafe in Spencer, Idaho which is about 60 miles north of Idaho Falls. Material is brought down from the main mine to a mini mine where anyone over 4 years old can dig for their own opal. The fee to dig covers one pound of rock that you can take home. No tools are provided so bring your own and bring eye protection. Open 7 days a week from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The Spencer Opal Mine is the largest privately owned gem stone producer and the major producer of opal in Idaho.

Bruneau Dunes State Park

Bruneau Dunes State ParkLocated in Mountain Home, which is about 50 miles southeast of Boise. The dunes here are unique in the Western Hemisphere because unlike most sand dunes that form at the edge of a natural basin, these dunes form near the center. Unlike most dunes, these don’t drift much. It is also the site of North America’s highest single-structured sand dune at 470 feet. Camping is available all year. You can climb on the dunes but no motorized vehicles are allowed on them. Other activities in the park include, boating, hiking, horseback riding, swimming, fishing, and dune skiing and sledding. There is an observatory at the park that is open to the public from early April through mid-October on Friday and Saturday nights.
